John Carpenter’s style and Panavision shots are on display here, in his first feature. Yes, we know technically Dark Star is Carpenter’s first, but that was an expanded student short. Assault on Precinct 13 was made on a budget of $100,000 and shot in only 20 days. So the movie has problems, but they are totally forgivable considering the limitations of the budget.

But he’s really a teddy bear. Yes, that sounds like loads of romantic comedies, but the writing and acting elevate this to something really special. The character’s motivations make sense and the three leads all have full character arcs. The film was a box-office hit (grossing $148 million) during Titanic’s historic box-office run. It was nominated for 7 Academy Awards, winning 2 for Best Actor and Best Actress.
