After Alien: Resurrection performed horribly at the box-office, Jean-Pierre Jeunet returned to France to make his biggest hit to date. Amélie is also the highest grossing French language movie in the US. It was nominated for 5 Academy Awards including, Sound, Screenplay, Cinematography, Production Design, and Best Foreign Language Film.

Episode 123: The crew’s starting their month-long Foreign Film Series, with the Swedish vampire film, Let the Right One In. It’s expert camerawork and brilliant storytelling caught the eye of Hollywood studios, that not only made a remake, but put the director (Tomas Alfredson) and the cinematographer (Hoyte Van Hoytema) to work to in Tinseltown. The crew compares the novel and remake to the Swedish version, and asks “Is it the best vampire film ever made?”.

Clint Eastwood is back in his iconic role, Jim Carrey lip-syncs to Guns N’ Roses, and there’s a car chase with a toy RC car! The film seems tone-deaf to police brutality in our modern times; there’s a scene with “Dirty” Harry Callahan shooting a fleeing suspect in the back. Episode 119: The crew’s heads are exploding with excitement to discuss Scanners with guest, writer, Christopher M. O’Brien. It’s David Cronenberg’s first box-office hit, which lead to Hollywood Studios knocking on his Canadian door with offers of bigger budgets. Scanners may be in the same vein as Carrie and The Fury, but make no mistake, this is a Cronenberg film. His body horror roots are on display here. Spoiler Warning as always!

Episode 118: The crew’s celebrating The Dark Knight’s 10 year anniversary. It’s the box-office hit that made every Hollywood studio want a comic book property, it expanded the Academy’s Best Picture nominations from 5 to a possible 10 titles, and director Christopher Nolan became a household name (at least to nerds). Heath Ledger’s dark/funny performance of the Joker earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar after his death, which was only 7 months before the film released.
